The two long time rivals Bishop Carroll and Liberal shared a football field for the first time since 2013 Friday night.   The former district 8 foes met in the first round of the 5A playoff Friday night with the Redskins winning 17-6 at Gary Cornelsen Sports Complex.  It was Liberal’s first win over the Eagles since 2003, Gary Cornelsen’s last year as head coach.

The Skins started fast on offense as Xavier Porras raced 50 yards into the southeast endzone for a score on the opening drive and a 7-0 lead.  That was the score after one quarter.  Liberal fumbled and Carroll recovered in Redskin territory.  Max Holman tipped a BCHS pass into the arms of Adan Amador for an interception at the goal line.  The Redskins drove the ball all the way from the one to the Carroll five, but settled for a 22 yard field goal by Horacio Casas to take a 10-0 lead at halftime.  Landon Martinez blocked a punt setting up the Redskins in great field position.  A Xavier Porras one yard touchdown made it 17-0 with 5:34 to play.  The Eagles got on the scoreboard when Jonah Mull zipped a touchdown pass to Nick Wineland to make it 17-6 after Andy Nguyen blocked the PAT.  Adan Amador intercepted a deep ball to secure the win for the Redskins.  Amador was Epic Touch Player of the Game.

The Angry Red defense stood tall holding Carroll to 14 carries for 17 yards.  The Eagles had 102 yards of offense.  The Redskins had 360 yards.  James Fieser had nine catches for 115 yards.  Xavier Porras logged 36 carries for 162 yards.  Xavier Tafoya had 13 carries for 75 yards.  Tevin Cotter was 13-19 for 143.  Xavier Tafoya led the Skins with seven tackles.

Bishop Carroll finishes 2-7.  The Eagles had won eight straight in a series Liberal leads 23-12.  The Redskins are 7-2.  They win playoff games back to back seasons for the first time since 2003 and 2004.  Liberal plays at 7-2 Hutchinson Friday night at 7pm with Redskin Pre-game on 1270 and 92.3.  Liberal is 0-5 against the Salt Hawks.
