Seward County continued their streak of road games on Wednesday for an early matchup with the Barton Cougars in Great Bend where the Lady Saints kicked off against their Jayhawk foe where the Cougars took the lead late in the first half and remained in control the rest of the way with SCCC taking a 2-1 loss to Barton in conference action.
Miu Kamei saw action early into the first half with the Cougars launching a barrage of shots at the freshman goalie who recorded three quick saves in the first few minutes to keep the score blank at 0-0. Through the first half hour of action, it was a defensive minded game plan to hold back Barton before a spot opened for Dayra Dinarte to send in her first shot on goal of the afternoon which barely missed outside the crossbar to remain scoreless on the day. It was the Cougars however who scored first with an unassisted goal at the 35:29 mark of the first half to put Seward County behind 1-0 entering the halftime break.
The Lady Saints tried to rely on their defensive prowess in the second half as they waited for another chance to drive down field. Abigail Artley and Kiara Leiton forced multiple turnovers by the Cougars to build momentum in favor of the team in green but eventually fell prey to preciscion passes from Barton who connected in the back of the goal again at the 75:16 mark to make it a 2-0 deficit for SCCC. Seward County refused to go home without a goal as they switched gears to drive down field with Dinarte finding another opportunity to score but again missed out on her shot on goal attempt. With 10:00 minutes left the Lady Saints took another charge down field with Meredith Rosas taking control and launching in a timely shot from ten yards out to sink in a goal for Seward County to put her team on the board. Despite gaining momentum late in the contest it could not lead to another score for the Lady Saints who fell in Great Bend 2-1 against the Cougars.
Seward County now falls to 2-5-3 on the 2024 season with a 1-5-2 record in Jayhawk Conference action. They will continue their road stint with a pair of road games this weekend beginning with a 5:00 PM kickoff against Kansas City Kansas on Saturday followed by a 3:00 PM game with Metropolitan on Sunday.
