Liberal, Kansas – After standing toe-to-toe with some of the top teams in the Jayhawk Conference through the first few weeks of the 2024 season, Seward County’s unbeaten record in conference play was taken down as Dodge City scored a quick goal less than five minutes into the first half for a 1-0 lead and despite their best efforts to put the ball in the goal late into the contest, the Saints were unable to overcome the Conquistadors on Redskin Field.
Seward County and Dodge City made the game interesting early on with the Conqs finding a gap in the Saints defense for a quick shot that was just centimeters out of reach from Bruno Mestres who manned the goal with DC3 taking a 1-0 lead five minutes into the contest. From there it was a defensive battle with both teams holding each other at bay defensively to make it nearly impossible for any shots to get off as the first half ended with a 1-0 lead by Dodge City over Seward County.
The Saints were able to find very few opportunities to shoot in the second half with Fin McCole getting one of the best looks of the night from the left side that was just a few inches away from connecting in the goal. Matheus Ambrozio and Leonardo Leitaoeach took shots of their own to try and get the Saints on the board but could not get past the opposing goalkeeper. SCCC’s goalkeeper however made good in the second half with multiple high flying saves to keep it just a one score game as Mestres even came out of the box to push the tempo up field to get the offense rolling for Seward County. The Saints however were not able to match the Conqs’ early goal with Seward County falling 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Seward County now falls to 2-2-3 on the 2024 season and now sit at 0-1-3 in Jayhawk Conference action. The Saints will wrap up a two-game homestead with a nonconference matchup with Tabor College on Wednesday September 18th with kickoff scheduled for 6:00 PM.
