Eleanor Bernice Arbuthnot, 98, of Castle Rock, Colorado, passed away on August 16, 2024.
Eleanor was born on March 16, 1926, in Floris, Oklahoma, to Curt and Agatha (Wiens) Vogt. Her family moved to Seward County, Kansas when she was six years old, where she attended a one-room schoolhouse called Bluebell School.
After graduating, she worked at Ray’s Grill and a café in Tyrone, Oklahoma, as a waitress. She always commented on how she enjoyed her job of service and interaction with people! While working at Ray’s Grill, she was introduced to her future husband, Billy Charles Arbuthnot, and they were married in 1949 in Hayes, Kansas.
Eleanor and Bill moved to Venezuela in 1955 as Bill obtained a position at an oil field in Anaco. They adopted their son Curtis in April of 1958 in Venezuela, and soon after that, they moved back to Kansas to have Curtis naturalized and opened a laundromat. After a short time in Kansas, her family spent the next 20 years going back and forth between several cities in South America and Houma, Louisiana.
Eleanor returned to Kansas from South America in 1978 following the death of her husband Bill. In 1979 she lived with her brother Al and they invested in a solar business together. Then, after a few years, she invested in houses in Colorado and then Kansas where she took a position at Dillons grocery store.
She spent her retired years camping on Lake Mead in her little motorhome, traveling with friends, crocheting a ton of beautiful blankets, loved bowling, cards and farkle, and being competitive at all her games. In 2008 she moved to Colorado, and really enjoyed the community of friends she made at her new home at the Reyn Rock senior apartment building. She was an avid bingo player and really looked forward to Bingo with her friends every Wednesday evening.
Eleanor is remembered as being adventurous, strong, competitive, hard-working, and inclusive. She made friends easily, her house was always open, and her home was always a memorable place for her family and friends to visit! She had a great memory, and loved to share her stories, she loved all her family well, and valued her friends greatly. She always had a positive outlook on life! She lived through some difficult eras and amazing adventures, and would tell many stories of her life during the great depression, the dust bowl, and her time spent in places like Venezuela, Columbia, and Trinidad and Tobago.
She was an amazing wife, mom, grandma, great-grandma, sister, auntie, and friend to all. Her absence will forever be felt, and she will be missed greatly. Eleanor was preceded in death by her mom Agatha Vogt, her dad Curt Vogt, her husband Billy, and her son Curtis, her sisters Twyla Mae Smith and Evelyn Waybright, and her brother Alfred Dyck. She is survived by her four grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
