Hays, KS — Liberal High School Lady Redskin Golf Team travelled to Hays on Tuesday, September 3rd to open the season and WAC play at the Hays High Girls Golf Invitational. This year’s Hays tournament was shortened to just 9 holes due to the fairways being aerated on the back 9.
With a very young and inexperienced team, there was a big question mark when it came to trying to estimate what the Lady Redskins would do in their first competition of the new season. “Not a single girl that competed today had ever played an entire 9 holes of golf at one time,” Coach Bert Luallen said. “This was a nervous time for all of them as it was the first time they had ever played in competition.”
“I’m quite happy with the way these young ladies played and even more proud of them for the way they conducted themselves,” Luallen stated. Junior Addy Lopez led the way for Liberal with a 69. Sophomores Lindsey Morlan scored a 74 and Ashley Romero Reyes carded a 78. Freshmen Scarlett Carr posted a 77, Cali Gonzales had an 83, while Karmen Martinez finished with an 87.
Atwood’s Amelia Bowles and Hays’ Jaycee Oakley shot a tournament best 41 on the day, with Bowles winning the playoff for the gold medal.
As far as team scores, Garden City took first with a score of 195. Salina-Central posted a 196. Hays-TMP scored a 208 with the host Hays High posting a 212. Junction City had a 249, Dodge City had a 267, while Liberal posted a 298. Great Bend, Salina South and Topeka West also competed but did not have the necessary number of 4 players to have a team score.
The Lady Redskins will participate in the Dodge City JV tournament on Thursday before returning to Varsity play at the Dodge City Girls Golf Invitational at Mariah Hills on September 12th.
