Eagles Have Each Other’s Backs

Brock Kappelmann - August 22, 2024 2:36 pm

“I’ve got your back.”  Hugoton High School principal Melody Witt gave these encouraging words to Hugoton football players on and off the field on game nights.  Those words have increased meaning this August.  On July 11th, Witt passed away.  Later that month, the Hugoton football team mourned the death of sophomore Everett Betts.  It was a rough month in Hugoton.

The calendar had turned to August and football is back.  Fourth year head coach Jay Witt is aiming to help his team and himself slowly heal after losing his wife and one of his hard working young players.

The Eagles have 58 out for football and five starters back on both sides.  They have been 6-3 each of the past two seasons.  Some of the key players are Sr. LT/MLB Robert Williams, Sr. K Christian Zizumbo, Jr. QB/FS Miguel Hernandez, Sr. RG/DT Josephe Hernandez (squats 590 lbs), Sr. RT/DE Grant Niehues, So. C Achilles Agulera, Jr. LG Riley Pennington (6’3″ 265), Jr. RB Hunter Garza, Jr. RB Jair Soldano, and Jr. OLB Jorge Agulera.

The Eagles were featured during Sportsguys Thursday morning.
