Liberal, Kansas – Following two years on the mound for the Saints in the 2023 and 2024 seasons, TJ Newman has signed to the four-year level with Evangel University to continue his baseball career at the next level for the Valors.
In two years on the mound for Seward County, Newman appeared in 32 games with 15 starts while recording 9 wins and 3 saves. He pitched in 101.0 innings with 84 strikeouts for the Saints as one of their top pitchers. This past season alone he recorded 14 starts in 15 games with 6 wins while tripling his innings pitched from his freshman campaign, going from 26 to 75 innings pitched. As a sophomore, Newman struck out 57 batters with six games of five or more strikeouts including a career high of 7 in a 3-2 win over Trinidad State in just six innings on the mound.
Newman will head to join a Valors team that went 24-26 in the 2024 season including a 16-20 record in conference action against KCAC competition. Evangel saw a lot of success in series against Hannibal-LaGrange and Saint Mary (KN) with the Valors sweeping both teams in the 2024 season. Newman will be able to step up on the mound in the 2025 season as a veteran presence with winning experience that can lead Evangel back to the top of the conference.
“We are incredibly excited that TJ found a home” said Head Coach Mike Davidson. “He is one competitive guy. Evangel is getting a good one on the mound. We all wish you well TJ.”
Newman is now one of ten players to sign on to the four-year level for the Saints. He joins Trenton Rowan (Arkansas), Brian Luna Alvarez (Texas Tech), Todd Baffa (Maine), Cameron Cartwright (Colorado Mesa), Tyler Wilcox (Oklahoma Christian), Trent Gerber (Central Oklahoma), Elias Herrera (Northwestern Oklahoma State), Connor Raney (Dakota State), and Mason Hagel-Pitt (Colorado Christian).
