Days after SCCC held a groundbreaking ceremony, work has begun on the building renovation for the Student Health Center. Workers from French Construction gutted the former dormitory to make way for the student-centered renovation.
“We’re designating half this building for our mental health counselor and our on-site student health clinic,” said SCCC President Brad Bennett. “Both care providers have been offering no-cost services to our students for nearly a year, and this location is going to make a huge difference in how that care is accessed.”
The other half of the building will be transformed into an after-hours space for dorm residents with a full kitchen, movie-viewing space and study areas.
“Students, especially those who come to SCCC from other communities, states, or even countries, often find themselves struggling when the cafeteria is closed or the college is on break,” Bennett noted. “This will provide a way for them to cook, hang out with friends, and do so at times when other campus buildings might not be available.”
Coinciding with the SCCC Foundation’s Annual Giving Day, the groundbreaking event drew a crowd of more than 75 guests to campus.
“It’s exciting to see this taking shape,” said SCCC Associate Director of Alumni and Annual Giving Sarah Thompson. “On Giving Day, of course, donors can specify where they want their gift to be applied — it isn’t limited to this project. But we’re thrilled to see the public support for this project.”
