Seward County Commission Adds Ballot Question

The Seward County Commission met Monday evening, and at the request of Eli Svaty with the Seward County Development Corporation, the Board of County Commissioners added a Question to the November Ballot to allow the registered voters of Seward County to determine whether to remove the 30% requirement of food sales for establishments that sell liquor by the drink. Counties across Kansas have been repealing this statute through public elections to support craft breweries, wineries, and distilleries.
Commissioners approved the purchase of trucks for the Landfill and amended the budget to give Brock Thiener the spending authority to make the purchase.
The Commission decided to take a look at an increase in wages for Deputies and Records staff in an effort to remain competitive with a tight labor market. Commissioners will revisit the request at budget time.
In an informational item, Commissioners heard about a DROP Benefit – Deferred Retirement Option Program for County employees, and approved the design change directive from GMCN for the bleachers at Rodeo Arena.
The Commissioners also Commissioners also rescinded their motion made on May 20, 2024 of $24,000 and made a new motion with the correct amount of $28,000 from CIP, County Equipment, to go towards the purchase of the skid steer loader for Road & Bridge.
