Redskins Walk Off Red Demons

Despite seven errors, the Liberal baseball team rallied to beat the Dodge City Red Demons 7-6 on a walk off Tuesday night at National Beef Sports Complex. The Redskins rallied from being down 6-1.
The Demons scored one in the second as Liberal missed two infield pop ups. Liberal scored in the bottom of the second at Marco Alonso and Erek Lira singled. LHS scored on a DCHS error. Liberal’s defense fell apart in the third allowing five runs on five errors. Liberal’s bats awakened in the fifth. Brooks Kappelmann reached on an error and Zayden Martinez singled. Erek Lira rolled an RBI single up the middle. Landon Martinez long drive to deep left was dropped for a two RBI double to make it 6-4. Three of the first four hitters in the Redskin sixth walked. Zayden Martinez singled home a run. Marco Alonso grounded out but drove home the tying run. Xavier Porras singled to right center with one out in the bottom of the seventh. He stole second and advanced to third on an error as the throw from the catcher vaulted off the Demon covering second into left field placing a runner on third with one out. Skyler Hubbard lined a sac fly to center to score Porras and win the game 7-6.
Liberal out-hit Dodge City 8-6. Liberal had seven errors and the Demons had three.
Brooks Kappelmann pitched six strong innings and did not allow an earned run. He struck out 11 and walked one. Zayden Martinez worked a scoreless seventh for the win. Zayden Martinez, Erek Lira, and Marco Alonso had two hits a piece.
The Red Demons are 8-14 overall and finish 3-5 in the WAC. Liberal is 12-10 overall and 2-5 in the WAC. The Redskins host Garden City Friday night at 6pm for their last regulars season game. The game will air on 1270 and 92.3.
