Redskins Break Out in Win at Garden City

The Liberal Redskins banged out seven extra base hits in a 14-1 run rule win at Garden City Tuesday evening.  Liberal’s previously dormant offense broke out and gained the program’s first road WAC win since 2019.

LHS scored an unearned run without a hit in the first.  The Redskins broke the game open with five in the third.  Adan Mata walked and Aidan Schwindt singled.  Brooks Kappelmann walked.  Zayden Martinez singled home a run.  Marco Alonso whistled a two RBI triple to left center.  Blayden Betts drove home a run and reached on an error.  Landon Martinez singled to center to make it 6-1.  The Buffaloes scored an unearned run in the third after two Redskin errors on one play.  LHS countered with three in the fourth.  Adan Mata walked, Aidan Schwindt laid down a sac bunt.  Brooks Kappelmann hit an RBI double down the third baseline.  Zayden Martinez ripped an RBI double to left center.  Marco Alonso narrowly missed a home run with an RBI double off the fence in left.  LHS led 9-1 after three.  The Ski9ns scored five in the fifth.  Xavier Porras singled.  Adan Mata ripped an RBI triple to right center.  Brooks Kappelmann singled home a run.  Marco Alonso doubled home a run to right center.  Blayden Betts singled home a run.  Erek Lira doubled over the left fielder to drive home a run.

Liberal out-hit GCHS 13-3 while Garden City had five errors and Liberal had three.  Marco Alonso was Epic Touch Player of the Game going 3-4 with a triple, two doubles, and four RBI’s.  Brooks Kappelmann and Zayden Martinez were 2-3 with two RBI’s.  Adan Mata tripled and got on base all three times.  Brooks Kappelmann pitched all five innings with nine strikeouts and one walk.  He did not allow an earned run.

Garden City is 4-4 overall and 0-4 in the WAC.  Liberal is 3-6 overall and 1-4 in the WAC.  The Redskins play at Woodward for a double header Friday at 4pm.
