Skins Handle Hugoton in Baseball Opener

Liberal’s baseball team opened the season with two blowout wins at Legend Field in Hugoton on Thursday afternoon and evening. On a day with temperatures in the mid 60’s with virtually no wind, LHS won 17-0 in three innings and 12-0 in five innings.
In game one, J. Brooks Kappelmann pitched three hitless innings with eight strikeouts and one walk. Adan Mata was 3-3. Aidan Schwindt was 2-3. Marco Alonso doubled. LHS scored six in the first, two in the second, and nine in the third. Liberal out-hit the Eagles 10-0. HHS had seven errors.
In game two, Zayden Martinez worked three strong innings for the win. He struck out seven, walked one, and did not allow a hit. Marco Alonso went two shutout innings. Brooks Kappelmann was 3-3 with three RBI’s and two runs. Zayden Martinez, Marco Alonso, Erek Lira, and Blayden Betts added two hits a piece. Kappelmann, Betts, and Alonso all doubled. The Redskins scored two in the first, five in the second, three in the third, one in the fourth, and one in the fifth. LHS out-hit HHS 12-1 and Hugoton had three errors.
Liberal is 2-0 and plays one game at Garden City Tuesday night at 6pm on 1270 and 92.3.
