Mary A. Montoya, age 87, of Johnson, Kansas, died Friday, August 25, 2023, at Stanton County Long Term Care Unit in Johnson, Kansas. She was born June 12, 1936, in Trinidad, Colorado, the daughter of Pablo and Estefanie (Sanchez) Marquez.
Mary grew up in Colorado and attended school in Trinidad. She was married to Eloy Sierra from 1959 until his death in 1963. She met and married Joe Montoya in Colorado and they were married in 1965. They lived in Colorado and California for a brief time, before settling in Johnson in 1968. Mary was a homemaker and babysitter. She enjoyed embroidery and listening to music. Her family was very important to her, and she enjoyed attending their events and activities. Mary was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church.
She is survived by her children, Debbie Housholder of Liberal, Joe Sierra and wife Alma of Dalhart, Texas, Stephen Sierra and wife Amanda of Johnson, and Carlos Montoya of Mount Vernon, Washington; honorary daughter, Carrie Tarin of Johnson; siblings, Josie Garcia of Pueblo, Colorado, Frank Marquez of Boone, Colorado, Johnny Marquez and wife Ortencia of Pueblo, Colorado, Sylvia De Herrera of California, and Helen Martinez of Olney Springs, Colorado; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Pablo and Estefanie Marquez; husband, Eloy Sierra; husband, Joe Montoya; son, Pete Montoya; and grandson, Jose Sierra.
Rosary will be held at 9:30 AM on Thursday, August 31, 2023, and Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, August 31, 2023, both at the St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Johnson, Kansas, with Reverend Charles Seiwert officiating. Interment will follow at the Stanton County Cemetery in Johnson, Kansas. Friends may call from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, at Garnand Funeral Home in Johnson.
