Bat Cats Double Up Bee Jays

Brock Kappelmann - July 26, 2023 10:24 pm

The top team in the Wichita area league, the Great Bend Bat Cats beat the Liberal Bee Jays 6-3 Wednesday night at Al Burns Memorial Field in Great Bend.  It was Great Bend’s first game in 10 days after a wind and hail storm ravaged properties and trees in  the central Kansas town on July 16.

The Bee Jays scored two in the first.  Owen May singled.  Mateo Garcia ripped an RBI double to right.  Liberal scored a second run on an error.  Great Bend scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first.  Ryota Kusumoto singled home a run in the second for the 3-1 lead.  Great Bend scored three runs in the third to lead 4-3.  One run was unearned.  So two of the first four Bat Cat runs were unearned.  Great Bend tacked on one in the fourth and one in the sixth.

Both teams had nine hits.  Liberal committed three erros and GB had one.  Owen May was 2-4 while Nick Husovsky was 2-4 with a double and was Epic Touch Player of the Game.  Ryder Slatten worked three innings allowing three earned runs with four strikeouts and two walks.  Then the BJ high schools took the mound and kept the BJ’s in the game.  After wrapping up their Liberal Rattler seasons Sunday, Zayden Martinez and J. Brooks Kappelmann took the mound.  Martinez pitched three innings allowing two runs with four strikeouts and two walks.  Brooks Kappelmann worked two shutout innings with four strikeouts and no walks.

Liberal is 26-11 and Great Bend is 27-10.  The same two teams play night at 7pm with pre-game at 6:45 on 1270 and 92.3.
