Larry D. Winfrey, age 85, passed away Friday evening, May 12, 2023, at St. Catherine Hospital, Garden City, Kansas.

He was born October 31, 1937, the son of William E. and Alice Louise (Shuman) Winfrey. As a young boy he attended school in Plains, graduating from Plains High School in 1955. He then attended and graduated from the Wentworth Military Academy.

On August 9, 1959, he married Mickey Fink at Plains, Kansas. After their marriage he joined the United States Air Force, serving for four years including eighteen months in the Philippines. After his discharge, he returned to Plains and began farming with his parents and for his mother-in-law. In addition to his farming career, he owned and operated Quality Oil and had a backhoe and trenching business.

He was a member of the Plains United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite, and the American Legion. He enjoyed woodworking, golfing, hunting, model trains, collecting various items including hats, coins, belt buckles, model tractors, and reconditioning items, working in the outdoors, planting trees, helping people in the community and spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Mickey; children, Dale Winfrey and wife Nina, and, Tina Garinger and John Hancock; grandchildren, Wesley Winfrey and Emme Huber, Lindsay Garinger and Tucker Heaton, Brandon Winfrey and wife Kaylie, and Whitney Blevins and husband Dustin; great-grandchildren, Haisley, Kashlyn, Audrey, and Deacon; brothers, Gordon and James; and sister, Carol Palmer.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Darrel Winfrey; and a sister, Joy Brackey.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 19, 2023, at the Plains United Methodist Church. Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Thursday with the family from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary, Meade. Interment will follow the service in the Plains Cemetery.

The family would welcome memorials to the Plains United Methodist Church for the children’s church camp in care of the funeral home.
