Grass Fire Keeps Firefighters Busy

Shortly before 1pm Tuesday May 9, 2023 Seward County Firefighters we’re dispatched to a vegetation fire on Road 16 west of Road I in Northern Seward County. Firefighters arrived on the scene to find 10 acres of natural vegetation on fire.

The fire was accidental in nature, caused by cutting equipment being used to dismantle old agriculture sprinklers.

The department responded with 2 engines, 2 attack trucks, 1 water tender, 5 personnel, and 2 chief officers. No injuries were reported. Seward County Sheriff’s Office also assisted.

Seward County Fire Officials would like to remind people that with the current dry conditions and the lack of overwhelming moisture, extreme caution and planning should take place when performing work near dry grasses. Consider fire extinguishing devices and provide a fire watch when performing such work.
