Redskins Dust Off Dodge

On a windy and dusty evening at National Beef Sports Complex in Liberal, the Redskins won a WAC game against the visiting Dodge City Red Demons 7-2 on Wednesday night.  The south wind was blowing out at 30-40 miles per hour with temperatures in the upper 80’s.

The Redskins opened up the scoring in the bottom of the third.  Adan Mata lined a single to right.  Aidan Schwindt launched a two run home run to left for his second round tripper of the season.  Zayden Martinez roped a triple to right center.  He scored on Erek Lira’s sac fly to left to make it 3-0.  LHS added two in the fifth.  Aidan Schwindt singled and stole second.  Brooks Kappelmann lined an RBI single to center for the 4-0 lead.  Kappelmann would later score as Zayden Martinez was caught stealing at second.  The Demons score a pair of unearned runs without a base hit in the sixth to trim the lead to 5-2.  LHS committed an error and a runner reached on a dropped third strike.  LHS tacked on two in the sixth.  Landon Martinez walked, Fidel Avila singled through the right side, and Adan Mata walked.  Brooks Kappelmann singled to center to score a run.  Erek Lira walked with the bases loaded to score a run.   Brooks Kappelmann improved to 4-0 on the mound going 6 and 2/3 innings with 13 strikeouts and two walks.  Zayden Martinez got one out to close it.  Liberal out-hit DCHS 9-4.  Aidan Schwindt was 2-4 with a home run, two runs,  and two RBI’s.  Brooks Kappelmann was 2-4 with two RBI’s.  Fidel Avila and Zayden Martinez were 2-3.  Liberal’s defense made a couple of big plays early.  Center fielder Zayden Martinez threw out a runner at home on the fly in the first.  Brooks Kappelmann began a 1-6-3 double play in the second.

Dodge City falls to 3-4 and 0-1 in the WAC.  Liberal is 5-3 and 3-3 in the WAC.  DCHS had won six in a row over the Redskins.  Liberal hosts the Woodward Boomers Friday at 4:30 at the National Beef Sports Complex.
