Brock Kappelmann - April 7, 2023 7:22 am

The Seward County Saints won their ninth in a row before a game two loss at #9 Barton Thursday afternoon and evening at Lawson-Biggs Field in Great Bend.  The Saints won game one 4-3 and the Cougars took game two 12-11.

In game one, the Cougars scored one in the first.  The Saints tied it with a run in the third.  Cameron Cartwright drilled a solo home run over the left field wall.  The Cougars scored two in the bottom of the third to lead 3-1.   SCCC scored two in the sixth to tie it.  Connor Cox led off the sixth with a single.  Cameron Cartwright homered to left to tie the game.  Seward scored a run in the seventh to take the lead 4-3.  Tristan Curless singled and stole second.  Then the Barton pitched had Curless picked off between second and third but threw the ball away at third allowing Curless to score.  Brian Luna pitched to distance to improve to 6-2.  He allowed two earned runs with five strikeouts.  Cartwright was the Epic Touch Player of the Game going 2-3 with two home runs and three RBI’s.  Hits were even at 4-4 in the game.

Game two was an entirely different game with sloppy defense and wild swings of momentum.  Barton scored in the first.  SCCC tied the game with a run in the second.  Jordan Crowder singled and scored on a wild pitch.  Seward struggled defensively in the fourth.  Barton scored five runs on five hits and two errors.  All five runs were unearned.  That made it 6-1.  Barton scored four more in the fifth on three hits and one error.  Two runs were unearned.  That made the score 10-1 Cougars after five.  Seward slammed three home runs in the sixth and scored seven runs on five hits and an error.  Only two of the runs were earned.  Todd Baffa homered to left to lead off the inning.  Tristan Curless doubled.  Jordan Crowder singled him home.  With two outs, Barton committed an error at short.  Jaxson Gregg lifted a three run home run to left to cut the BCC lead to 10-7.  Elijah Bear homered to right for back to back home runs to make it 10-8 . Barton scored two unearned runs on one hit and one error in the seventh to lead 12-8.  SCCC plated three in the eighth to cut the lead to 12-11.  Cameron Cartwright singled and Ranse Radtke walked.  Jaxson Gregg hit a three run home run off the scoreboard in left center to trim the lead to one.  Seward out hit Barton 13-12 but the Saints committed four errrors and Barton had two.  Both teams allowed just three earned runs meaning the score would have been 3-3 without errors.  Aidan Moore went 4 and 1/3 and was victimized by errors allowing just two earned runs.  Bo Jacob Garza went two innings and did not allow an earned run.  Elias Herrera worked a scoreless eighth.  Jaxson Gregg was Epic Touch Player of the Game going 4-4 with two home runs, a double, and six RBI’s.

Seward is 21-19 overall and 11-7 in the Jayhawk West.  Barton is 33-4 overall and 12-2 in the Jayhawk West.  The Cougars are now 19-2 at home.  The Saints host the Cougars Saturday at 1pm at Brent Gould Field with Saints Dugout Show at 12:45 on 1270 and 92.3.
