Cayde Ward will be head coach for the Liberal Rattlers this summer. The former Liberal Bee Jay and Seward County player and current SCCC assistant will coach the 18u Rattler team this summer. Liberal did not field at Rattler 18u team last summer. The Liberal Baseball Association’s Brad Morris came on Sportsguys Wednesday morning and announced Ward will coach the team this summer.
Ward played for the Bee Jays for three summers in 2019, 2020, and 2021. In 2019, Ward hit .355 with seven homers, 32 RBI’s, and nine doubles. In 2020, Ward hit .394 with four homers, 10 doubles, and 48 RBI’s. In 2021, Ward hit .385 with nine round trippers, eight doubles, and 38 RBI’s.
Ward was an all Jayhawk West player at Seward. He wore the green in 2018 and 2019. As a freshman in 2018, Ward hit .427 with 11 HR’s, 25 doubles, and 52 RBI’s. As a sophomore in 2019, he hit .333 with eight homers, eight doubles, and 51 RBI’s. His 25 doubles in 2018 is second most in a single season in Saints history.
The Rattlers will hold a tryout in May after area high school seasons have concluded. The Liberal Baseball Association will have an 18u team and will have a 16u team also if there is enough interest. The Rattlers are still working on a schedule but will open the first weekend of June.
