More Gritty Effort Leads Lady Saints Past Independence

Seward head coach Todd Ciochetto said his team had their most physical practice in Liberal after their loss at Cloud on Wednesday. It translated to their game Saturday afternoon at the ICC Fieldhouse in Independence as Seward beat Indy 71-62. It’s Seward’s 4th win in the last five tries in Independence. The Lady Saints held ICC to 30 percent shooting and the Pirates were 3-26 from three point range.
Seward jumped on Indy early to lead 12-2, 14-3, 16-4, 20-6, and it was 20-7 SCCC after one quarter. Seward’s lead ballooned to 30-11 but the “Gals in Green” settled for a 39-26 lead at the half. Seward took third quarter leads of 45-26, 56-40, and 61-42 before taking a 61-46 lead after three.
The Lady Saints only committed 10 turnovers in the loss. Independence lost despite out-rebounding Seward 50-40. Indy was 19-29 at the free throw line and SCCC was 10-16. Seward made 11-31 from three.
Five Lady Saints scored in double digits led by D’Arrah Allen’s 18 points and five rebounds. Kylee Hunt had 11 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Halima Salat, De’Shawnti Thomas, and Alianna Colon scored 11 a piece.
Seward is 4-4 overall and 4-2 in the Jayhawk while Indy falls to 6-6 overall and 2-4 in the KJCCC. SCCC hosts Garden City Wednesday night at 6pm in the Green House with Saints Shoot-around at 5:45 on B107.5. Wendy’s is the buyout sponsor.
