Seward Bounces Back with Win at Dodge City

DODGE CITY, Kan. – Seward County Community College defeats Dodge City Community College 3-1 on Monday night. The recently ranked No. 15 Lady Saint went on to win the first two sets 25-16, 25-17 but fell in the third set 25-16 and closed out the match with a 25-20 fourth set victory. With the victory, the Lady Saints improve to 18-5 on the season and 8-1 in the KJCCC.

To start the match, the Lady Saints tied the match at five, all with a Sarah Cruz kill from the outside. Both teams exchanged points early in the opening set as Seward County had an 11-10 advantage. The Lady Saints’ offense took off as they started to place their attacks in the back row and found success and led 15-11.  Seward County closed out the first set on a 10-5 run as Ana Cambraia finished the set with a kill to give the Lady Saints a 25-16 first set win.

In the second set, both teams exchanged points, as Sarah Cruz connected on a kill to cut the Dodge City lead down to 5-4. Conquistadors took a 10-8 lead, but the Lady Saints responded with a 4-1 run 12-11 as Jessica Sales served two aces to gain the lead. After their first lead in the set, Seward County continued to use their momentum to take a 22-14 advantage with a kill from Aubreigh Haxton. Haxton finished the set with a kill from the outside as Seward County won the second set 25-17 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Early in the third set, the Conqs jumped out to a 3-0 lead that forced Head Coach Geno Frugoli to use a timeout, but Dodge City came out and scored four more to take a 7-0 advantage. With the early lead, the Conqs did not look back as Seward County faced their largest deficit of the match. Dodge City added their lead and led 12-4 over the Lady Saints, and the Conqs found themselves up 22-14 late in the third set. Dodge City won the third set 25-16 to win their first set as Seward County led the match 2-1.

After both teams exchanged points early in the fourth set, it was tied at 7-7 as the Lady Saints looked to close the match. Seward County faced a 13-10 deficit, but a block by Cambraia and DaSilva followed up by an ace by Michelle Jerez got the momentum back in the Lady Saints’ favor. For the first time in the fourth set, the Lady Saints had the lead 18-17 after a Seyun Park kill in the middle. Seward County closed out the fourth set on a 6-2 run and won the final set 25-20 over Dodge City.

The Lady Saints will be back in action in the Greenhouse on Wednesday night as they take on Garden City at 6:30 PM.
