Frank Phillips Shocks Seward in Opener

BORGER, Tex. – Seward County Community College fell at Frank Phillips College in the season opener in Borger, Texas, 3-1. The No. 17 Lady Saints lost the first two sets 23-25, 24-26, but bounced back to win the third set 25-19. The Lady Plainsmen closed the match in the fourth set, 22-25.
The Lady Saints will start conference action at Colby Community College on Wednesday, August 24th at 6:30 PM CT.
In set one, the Lady Saints traded off points early, but the Lady Plainsmen took an early 8-7 lead. The home crowd in Borger, Texas, energized the gym as the first set continued. After a kill from Ileim Terrero, Seward County led 21-18, but the Lady Plainsmen closed out the set on a 7-2 run to take a 1-0 lead, 25-23.
Seward County looked to respond in the second set and led 10-5 after a middle kill by Ana Cambraia. Later in the set, Frank Phillips took the lead late in the set, 22-18 over Seward County. The Lady Saints went on a 4-1 run to get within one point, 23-22. Seward County could not overcome the Frank Phillips attack as the Lady Plainsmen won set two, 26-24.
To start the third set, the Lady Saints jumped out to lead once, a gain of 10-6. They continued their strong offensive assault with attacks from the middle and led 16-9 after a kill by Rafaela DaSilva at the net. Seward County closed out the third set to force a fourth set with a final 25-19 set score.
The Lady Saints started the fourth set with a 10-4 advantage as they looked to force a fifth set. The Lady Plainsmen would respond with a 10-3 run to lead 14-13. They traded points as they tied at 19-19 late in the fourth set. The Lady Plainsmen closed out the fourth set with a 6-3 rally to take the set 25-22 and defeated the Lady Saints 3-1.
The Lady Saints were led Sarah Cruz, Seyun Park , and Cambraia with seven kills each. Defensively Seward County was led by Michell Jerez with 23 digs in the match.
Seward County will look to get their first win of the season at Colby Community Colelge on Wednesday night at 6:30 PM CT.
