Redskins Wrestle at Pratt

Brock Kappelmann - December 6, 2021 6:04 am

Liberal varsity wrestling took 14 wrestlers to Pratt compete in the 56th
annual Pratt tournament.  Half of the roster placed with the rest competing
tough against some of the state’s top talents in both boys and girls
divisions. On the girls’ side, Mana Chanthasone would lead the pack, going
3 and 0, pinning all three of her opponents to take 1st place. Last year’s
state qualifier, Leilani Torres (2-1) would take 2nd at 191, only falling
to a very tough Pratt girl ava Mull. The season’s up and comer, Angelica
Quezado (1-2), continued a strong early showing and picked up 4th place at
138. Other girls who traveled are Alexa Valenzuela (1-2), who went 1 and 2
with her first pin, and Georgina Dominguez (0- 2) and Isabella Gutierre
(0-4), who both had some of the states toughest wrestlers. The boys faced
some stellar competition and Trystan Juarez (2-1) led the way taking 2nd in
182 weight class, losing to Mason Levin a state placer from last year, 8 to
6. Liberal would get 3 boys to wrestle strong on the backside and pick up
some 3rds. Irving Mendez (5-1), Tommy McClure (5-1), and Jesus Torres
(3-1). Liberal’s other boys, Davian Franco (1-2), Alex Schwindt (0-2),
Edgar Landa (0-2), and Bradley Kendall (1-2) all battled hard and showed
improvements. “We started out shaky, but then a lot of kids turned on the
gas and started competing. We still have a ways to go, but a lot of heart
and class were shown today.
