Dee Ann Heckel

Dee Ann Heckel, age 64, departed this life on Monday, January 25, 2021, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. She was born February 27, 1956, in Ulysses, Kansas, the daughter Leon and Vi (Mattox) Heckel.

Dee Ann grew up in Ulysses and graduated from Ulysses High School in 1974. Shortly after that, she went to work at Gibson’s and worked there 28 years. She spoke fondly of her time spent there and the many friends she made. In 2002, she went to work at Russ’ Jack and Jill grocery store. Dee Ann enjoyed her time working in the community and always strived to put a smile on everyone’s face. She attended the Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church during childhood. Dee Ann had a huge heart and made everyone feel cared for. She was a lover of animals, especially cats. She will be deeply missed.

Survivors include her daughter, Elizabeth Mathes and husband Adam of Ulysses; granddaughters, Addison Mathes and Leah Mathes (Cristian Pauda); brother, Greg Heckel and wife Robin of Ulysses; along with many nieces and nephews.

Dee Ann is preceded in death by her parents, Leon and Vi; and sister, Shari Davison.

A Celebration of Life Service will be Saturday, February 13, 2021, at 10:00 AM at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel in Ulysses, Kansas, with Pastor Earl Heath officiating. Graveside service will be Saturday, February 13, 2021, at 1:00 PM at Silent Land Cemetery in Spearville, Kansas. The memorial service will be streamed live on Garnand Funeral Home Facebook Page. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be given to the American Kidney Fund, American Diabetes Foundation or to the donor’s choice in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave., Ulysses, Kansas 67880.
