Horyna’s 3 Saves Homecoming for Lady Red

Not much went as planned for the #2 Liberal Lady Redskins Friday night on homecoming in the Big House.  LHS fought major foul trouble all night and only made one field goal in the second half.  But that one field goal was a Katie Horyna 3 with 8.5 seconds left to tie the  game at 44-44.  That sent the game to OT and Liberal won 51-49 over the upset minded Dodge City Lady Demons.

Dodge City came in ready to play jumping on Liberal for a 10-6 lead.  The Lady Red led 12-11 after one quarter.  The Lady Skins led 16-11 and 24-13 in the second quarter before more foul trouble plagued Liberal.  LHS went into the halftime locker room leading 27-24.  LHS led 31-28 in the third quarter.  But the Lady Demons led most of the second half including 34-32 after three.  Liberal trailed 38-35 with 5:06.  LHS led 40-36 with four minutes and three minutes left.  Dodge led 44-40.  Horyna’s 3 tied the game.  The Lady Red never led by more than two in overtime.  Dodge City’s three point attempt to win the game missed from the right wing.

Machia Mullens scored 19 points with nine rebounds but fouled out.  Ashley Carrillo scored 10.  Three Liberal players fouled out and Katie Horyna’s minutes were limited due to three first half fouls and a fourth foul early in the third quarter.  There were 51 fouls and 67 free throws in the game.

Liberal continues to control their own destiny to win the WAC.  Liberal is 9-0 and 4-0 in the WAC while Dodge City is 6-3 and 0-2 in the WAC.  Liberal wins their eighth straight over Dodge City.  LHS wins their 43rd straight regular season game.  The Liberal girls have won 19 straight WAC games.  Liberal plays Andover Thursday at 3 in the Salina Invitational with Redskin Pre-game at 2:45 on 1270 and kscbnews.net.
