Redskins Grab Elusive Win at Dodge City

For just the fourth time, the Liberal Redskins beat the Dodge City Red Demons in the Dodge City Fieldhouse.  Thursday night the Skins escaped with a 55-52 win at Dodge in a game they led by as many as 11 before a fourth quarter Red Demon comeback.

The Redskins led 5-0 out of the gates and led 12-8 before a 12-11 advantage after one quarter.  The Skins led 20-12 and 22-14 in the second quarter before settling for a 22-17 halftime lead.  The Skins led 27-19 and 34-23 in the third quarter before a 42-33 advantage after three.  The Redskins led 44-33 early in the fourth quarter.  The Red Demons cut that lead to 44-41 with 5:50 to play.  DCHS led 48-46 with 4:30 to go.  An AJ Ramirez lay in tied the game at 48.  Braxton Hyde’s clutch baseline jumper gave the Skins a 52-50 lead with one minute to play.  Hyde and Hunter Hatcher hit key free throws down the stretch.  Dodge City shot a three pointer to tie the game from the left win but missed it.

AJ Ramirez had a career high 12 points and six rebounds and Braxton Hyde added 11.  The Redskins forced 23 Red Demon turnovers and led points off turnovers 17-6.  LHS only committed 11 turnovers.  The Redskins won despite shooting 39 percent and Dodge shot 38 percent.  Liberal won despite being out rebounded by eight.

It’s Liberal’s fourth win at Dodge City Fieldhouse.  They won there in 2009, 2016, 2017, and now the 2019-20 season.  The Skins are 3-2 and 1-0 in the WAC at the Christmas break.  Dodge City is 0-5.  Liberal plays at Hooker January 3 on 1270 and kscbnews.net.
