The Seymour Rogers football team hosted the Great Bend Panthers on
Thusday evening. The 7th grade Apaches came in to the game 0-4 hoping to
win their first game of the year against the winless Panthers. The Panthers
got off to a 6-0 lead with a long touchdown run in the 1st quarter. Seymour
had a good drive in the 2nd quarter but penalties drove them back and they
came up empty. Late into the 2nd quarter the score was still 6-0 Great Bend
when they broke a 67-yard touchdown run to take a 12-0 lead into halftime.
SRMS scored a 3rd quarter touchdown on a long run down the right sideline
by quarterback, Eziah Rodriguez to bring the score to 6-12 going into the
4th quarter. The apaches had a chance to hold the Panthers in the 4th in
hopes of getting the ball back to tie or even win but Great Bend broke free
for another long run to extend the lead to 18-6. Liberal had their chances
but had too many costly mistakes and they dropped their 5th game of the
season.
The 8th grade Apache football teach had much better results. The Apaches
came in having not allowed any offense to score points on them at home all
season long. They were hoping to finish the season holding all opponents
scoreless on offense. Liberal took an early lead in the game when RB Xavier
DeLaCruz broke a long run down the right sideline for a 6-0 lead. The rest
of the 1st half was full of penalties and punts as the first half ended in
a 6-0 SRMS lead. In the 2nd half the Apaches came out fired up and ready to
make a statement. After a couple of stops by both teams the Panthers
decided to try a fake punt from their 20 yard line and failed. This gave
the Apaches great field position and allowed QB Erick Garcia to run the
ball in for the TD. This was followed by Erek Lira running it in for the
2-point conversion for a 14-0 lead. At the start of the 4th quarter, RB
Haret Huerta took the ball into the endzone to extend the Apache lead to
20-0. The Apaches continued to stop the Panthers and got the ball back late
in the 4th quarter planning on running the clock out for the victory. Great
Bend called timeouts in an attempt to get the posession again so the
Apaches took advantage and ran a play to the right side of the field to
score Haret again for the 26-0 lead. SRMS held Great Bend one more time to
finish the game with a 26-0 victory. The Apache 8th grade defense didn’t
give up a single point all season long on the Apache Field.
Seymour Rogers travels to Ulysses next Thursday for a non-conference game
before taking on cross town opponents Eisenhower on October 17th to finish
the season.
The EMS 7th Grade Warrior football team stayed undefeated and the defense remained unbreakable as the motored to a 5-0 record by defeating the Horace Good Hawks 20-0. The warriors dominated the Hawks on the ground with the 1-2 punch of Ayden Juarez and Alex Schwindt. The warriors scored on their first drive with a 43 yard touchdown pass from Alex Schwindt to Anthony Aragonez. The two point conversion was successful and the warriors jumped out to an 8-0 lead. On their next possession it was a thundering ground game that lead to a 12 yard Ayden Juarez Touchdown and the Warriors took a 14-0 lead into halftime. The warriors defense was stout again causing two fumbles and coming up with an interception. In the 2nd quarter it was Julian Orrantia that forced a fumble with a big hit recovered by Alex Schwindt. In the third quarter it was Deigon Sturgeon who ripped the ball out of the Hawks runners on the opening possession of the second half. Leading to an Alex Schwindt 5 yard touchdown scamper around left tackle. The warriors got an interception in the 4th Quarter by Cruz Naverette and iced the game 20-0. They will move onto a battle of the unbeatens next week against the also 5-0 Hays Falcons in Liberal on Thursday at 4 o clock.
