KSCB News - October 7, 2009 12:00 am

Dry weather over the past week sparked a flurry of winter wheat planting in Kansas.

Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service reports that 53% of the winter wheat has been planted. The five-year average for early October is 57%.

Harvest of fall crops is also well under way.

In its report Monday, the agency said 31% of the Kansas corn crop has been cut, along with 4% of the sorghum and sunflower crops and 18% of the soybean crop.
