Seward Men and Women Win KJCCC Awards

The Seward County Community College basketball teams had great seasons and they have been recognized with well-deserved individual awards.

The Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference announced its All-Conference awards, which are broken down by East and West, and there were plenty of Lady Saints and Saints on the list.

The Lady Saints swept the individual awards as Silvia Veloso was the Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, Aquila Mucubaquire was Freshman of the Year and Austin Mefford was Coach of the Year.

Carla Covane and Veloso were named to the First Team All-Conference while Lexi Hernandez was named to the Second Team. Karolina Szydlowska and Mucubaquire were Honorable Mention.

Veloso averaged 13.6 points, 3.6 assists and 3.6 steals, Mucubaquire averaged 9.7 points, 2.1 assists and 1.2 steals, Covane averaged 12.1 points and 8.8 rebounds, Hernandez averaged 13.2 points with 75 three-pointers, 3.2 assists and 1.7 steals and Szydlowska averaged 9.8 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.4 blocks.

In his first season as a head coach, Mefford led the Lady Saints to a 22-2 conference record and 30-3 overall.

On the men’s side, Isiah Small was Defensive Player of the Year, Marco Morency was Co-freshman of the Year and Jason Sautter was Coach of the Year. Small was also named to the First Team All-Conference while Montrevion Flowers and Reggie Miller were named to the Second Team.

Small averaged 6.7 rebounds, 1.8 blocks and 1.3 steals with 14.7 points, Morency averaged 15.4 points and 5.6 rebounds, Flowers averaged 11.4 points and 3.7 rebounds and Miller averaged 10.2 points, 3.2 assists and 3.6 rebounds.

This season with the Saints, Sautter led his team to a 21-3 Jayhawk West record and 28-5 overall. He is 47-18 in two seasons at Seward and 102-48 in his overall career.
