School spirit took over the Greenhouse on Saturday night. It was Homecoming at Seward County Community College.

Fans filled the seats and the bleachers to watch the men’s and women’s basketball teams play Pratt Community Community and to see a king and queen crowned. They were also entertained by the Stanton County Pep Band, which played the National Anthem and various songs during breaks and intermissions of the games.

The annual event was preceded by activities throughout the week which included a casino night, three-minute caricatures, custom-made street signs and free doughnuts.

The highlight of the evening was the crowning of the 2019 Homecoming King and Queen. Cole Evans and Kaitlyn Van Vleet were crowned King and Queen.

Court candidatesTen students represented various student organizations as homecoming candidates. Queen nominees were Van Vleet, Skills USA; Veronica Paul, Esmadar Tavares, International Student Organization; Alba Torres, Phi Beta Lambda; and Ana Herrera, Circle K International. King nominees were Evans, Phi Theta Kappa; Moises Alvarez, Student Government Association; Brian Martinez, Cheer; Rodrigo Sanchez, Skills USA and Miguel Perez, Circle K International.

“It’s always a fun time,” said Wade Lyon, SCCC director of student life. “Kids get to go out and represent their clubs. It’s a nice build up with all the activities during the week and then shows up on Saturday. Friends and family come out. We’re about community and family at Seward County Community College and I think that’s what homecoming represents.”

And Homecoming would not be complete without the basketball games, which saw the Lady Saints and Saints come away with victories over Pratt.
