Officer Impersonation Scheme Under Investigation

The Liberal Police Department is investigating an apparent scheme that has been reported in an incident that occurred on September 28th in the early morning hours.

On September 28th, 2009, at about 4:30 a.m., a male caller phoned a residence in the 200 block of West Spruce claiming to be a Liberal Police Officer. The caller told the resident that the house was being broken into and to leave the residence. The caller sounded surprised when the resident offered to get her husband and disconnected the call.

The Liberal Police Department has determined that the incident was a scheme and law enforcement personnel was not involved in this contact.

Citizens are reminded that all law enforcement officers are issued credentials for official identification. Badges are not an official means of identification. If you have any suspicion that the person is not a law enforcement officer, you should request their credentials to confirm their identity and the agency employing them.

If you have had a similar experience, you should call the Liberal Police Department to make a report at (620) 626-0150 or the Crime Hotline at (620) 624-4000.
