Seven-year-old Emmaline Luna of Holcomb, 10-year-old Mia Montes of Holcomb and 13-year-old Edgar Morales of Liberal are the southwest Kansas winners in their age divisions in the 2018 Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day poster contest.

Each student received a bicycle from the Kansas Turnpike Authority and a helmet donated by Safe Kids Kansas at presentations at their schools. The prizes were presented by the Kansas Department of Transportation and the Kansas Highway Patrol at the student’s school.

A total of 836 kids across Kansas ages 5 to 13 took the time to think about safety and participated in the contest. Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day is a nationwide effort to increase roadway safety and reduce all traffic fatalities.
