School Districts Consider Options

KSCB News - September 23, 2009 12:00 am

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – Cuts in state aid for Kansas’ public schools

have revived talk of a lawsuit over education funding.

Wichita attorney Alan Rupe (roop) said Tuesday he’s discussing

the possibility of a new lawsuit with western Kansas school

districts.

Officials from Dodge City and Liberal had planned to attend a

Tuesday evening meeting in Dodge City. Officials from Garden City

were invited but couldn’t go.

Rupe says the meeting was only for sharing information, not

deciding whether a lawsuit is warranted.

But he says the state is closer to facing a lawsuit because of

funding cuts this year.

Rupe was the lead attorney in a lawsuit filed against the state

in 1999 that forced the Legislature to dramatically increase aid to

public schools in 2005 and 2006.
