Bee Jays Collapse Late in Loss

The Bee Jays led 9-5 going into the ninth against a team who was 0 for July. But the Great Bend Bat Cats found enough in reserve to rally and shock Liberal 14-9 in 10 innings Saturday night at Brent Gould Field. Liberal is 2-2 in extra inning games but the two loss have come at home to the bottom two teams in the league Haysville and now Great Bend.
The Bat Cats grabbed the early lead against starter Josh Zanger scoring two in the second and one in the third. The Bee Jays plated two in the bottom of the third. Great Bend scored a run in the fourth to lead 4-2. Liberal scored one in the fourth and broke through with four in the fifth to lead 7-4. Liberal added runs in the sixth and seventh. The Bat Cats scored one in the sixth. Liberal allowed four in the ninth and five in the tenth. In the tenth, BJ right fielder Sean Arnold ran into the wall and was hurt on the play. He was taken out of game. The Bat Cats banged out 19 hits to Liberal’s 15. The Cats had three errors and the BJ’s had one.
Josh Zanger went five innings and allowed four runs. Boone Montgomery worked three innings and allowed one run. Channy Ortiz worked the ninth and went 1 and 1/3 allowing five runs. Zach Zeller allowed three without an out. Bailey Cantu worked 2/3 allowing one run.
Liberal falls to 21-13 and 17-11 in the Jayhawk League. Great Bend is 8-21 in the Jayhawk. The same two teams play Sunday night at 7 at Brent Gould Field with pregame at 6:45 on 1270 and kscbnews.net. Technology for All is the buyout sponsor.
