Liberal is picking up the pieces this week after a 32-8 opening loss at Fischer Field in Newton Friday. Newton amassed 356 yards to Liberal’s 207 yards in the game. The Railers rushed for 250 yards and quarterback Evan Thomas passed for 106 yards (7-13). Newton hit Liberal in the first half for several long pass plays over the middle. LHS head coach Wade Standley says those are correctable errors. “We just have to read our keys and play our coverage,” Standley said. “We were in a deep corners coverage all the way across. That coverage is designed to not allow a big play. We didn’t stick with our keys and we bit on a couple of things.”
Jade Cathey led the Redskins with eight catches for 67 yards in the loss. Charles Turner rushed for 77 yards on 13 carries. Liberal had 99 rushing yards while they were 13-31 for 108 yards passing. Kawon Russell caught Liberal’s lone touchdown. Standley says better days lie ahead for the Angry Red. “This is one game,” Standley said. “It doesn’t take away from our goals of winning a district championship or a conference championship.”
