Three Booker High Students Killed In Traffic Accident

Five people died in an automobile accident with three being students of Booker High School and another young girl was airlifted to an Amarillo hospital yesterday after a two-vehicle collision 10 miles north of Pampa on Texas Highway 70. The names of the deceased were not released pending notification of relatives, according toTrooper Daniel Hawthorne of the Department of Public Safety. In a report from the Amarillo Globe News,at about 1:40 p.m., a southbound minivan collided at a curve in the two-lane road with the cab of a tractor-trailer rig traveling north. Hawthorne said that as the two vehicles approached one another, the minivan crossed the yellow center line into the oncoming lane. The truck driver steered right toward a ditch, and the van hit the cab’s back wheels. The collision occurred just north of a well-known Roberts County community center called the Little Red School House. Two of the victims were bother and sister with four of the five being related Traffic was rerouted around the crash site on farm-to-market roads and county roads. Highway 70 was reopened for traffic at 6:05 p.m. The detour added about 20 miles to the journey between Pampa and Perryton.
