Lady Saints Reign Supreme in Region 6

The Seward Lady Saints had reason to celebrate. Seward won the Region 6 championship Wednesday night at Hartman Arena in Park City. Seward defeated Independence 59-47 Wednesday night to win their first region title since 2007.
Indy led 12-11 after one quarter before Seward led 25-20 at the half. The Lady Saints led 43-30 before leading 43-34 at the end of three quarters. The Lady Saints led 51-45 with 3:01 to play before holding on to win.
Mollie Mounsey had 21 points and was named the tournament MVP. Silvia Veloso had 10 points, eight assists, seven steals, and seven rebounds. Vilma Covane had 11 points and six rebounds and Brennyn Seagler had 11.
Seward held Indy to 32 percent shooting while only making 35 percent of their field goals against the Lady Pirate rugged defense. Indy was 1-9 from three point range while the Lady Saints were 6-26. Seward was 9-13 from the foul line and ICC was 12-12. The Lady Pirates out-rebounded the Lady Saints 45-32 while Seward forced Independence into 26 turnovers.
Seward is 30-3 and moves on to the NJCAA Tournament in Lubbock which begins March 19. The selection show is Monday at 11 a.m. Indy finished 26-7. Seward wins two of three in the season series.
This is Seward’s sixth region title. They trail only Barton (9) and Hutchinson (7). Seward is now 6-8 in Region 6 championship games. This is SCCC coach Toby Wynn’s second region title and fourth trip to the NJCAA Tournament. Last year Seward went 32-3 and played eventual champ Gulf Coast to their closest game of the tournament.
