Lady Saints Split Second Series with Lamar

LAMAR, Colo. – A week after splitting a doubleheader against Lamar, the Seward County softball team (6-10) split another doubleheader against the Lopes, winning the first game 5-2 before dropping the second 7-2.

GAME ONE RECAP

Monique Ashley (5-3) started game one, pitching 7.0 inning and striking out 8 batters in the win. She gave up six hits and just one earned run.

Seward got on the board first. After the first two batters were forced out, Madeline Owen walk to reach first. Sage Harrison stepped up to the plate and doubled to left field to score Owen.

Two singles put runners at first and third in the top of the second before Raelyn Sanchez reached on a single with a hard grounder up the middle to score Leena Mortensen. Two batters later, Kaitlin Ammermann singled with another grounder up the middle to score Lexi Manyik to make it 3-0.

Lamar answered in the bottom of second. With two pop outs from the first two batters, the Lopes quickly loaded the bases with two singles and a hit-by-pitch. An error with the next at-bat allowed the base runner to come home to bring the score to 3-1.

Scoring had to wait until the fifth. The Lopes pulled within one point for the Lady Saints with a sacrifice fly to center field. Lamar got bases runners from two singles, putting runners at first and third for the sac fly.

A two-out double by Sage Harrision scored two runs to put the game out of reach. Sanchez and Owen were both walked before Harrison hit a ground ball down the right field line to score both runners, making the game 5-2.

GAME TWO RECAP

Jordan Cordrey (0-5) started in the circle in game two for the Lady Saints, pitching 6.0 innings. She gave up 11 hits, while striking out six Lopes. Three of the seven runs were earned.

The Lady Saints scored their only two runs of the game in the first inning. A single, double and walk loaded the bases for Leena Mortensen as she doubled to center field to score Jullian Atteberry and Madeline Owen.

Lamar quickly answered to tie the game in the bottom of the first. A leadoff double followed by a walk and a single loaded the bases for the lopes before a double to centerfield scored two runs to make it 2-2.

The Lopes took lead in the second inning with a single to left field. Lamar’s baserunners reached from a single and a dropped third strike. The score made it 3-2.

Lamar exploded in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach for the Lady Saints. A fielder’s choice followed by a walk put runners at first and second for the Lopes before a triple scored both of those runners. A single with the next pitch brought home the third run of the inning, making it 6-2.

A solo home run by the Lopes in the bottom of sixth was the final run of the game as Lamar won the game 7-2.

Seward will return to Liberal to open up Jayhawk Conference play on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. against Colby.
