For a second consecutive season, the Liberal Redskins are 3-1. Liberal traveled to Wichita Friday and defeated the Wichita North Redskins 40-6 Friday night at Heights Stadium in north Wichita. LHS put up 415 yards of offense while North had 152. North is a struggling program, now 5-65 the past six seasons and loses a 16th straight game. Former Meade coach Scott Moshier is in his first season of this major undertaking.
Liberal went for two every time they scored and got it every time. Syris dunlap scored on an eight yard run at the 7:06 mark for an 8-0 lead after Cesar Burciaga’s two point conversion. Dunlap’s five yard run at the 11:20 mark made it 14-0 and his pass to Tucker Deaton for 2 made it 16-0. North’s time consuming 18 play drive resulted in a score with 2:03 to play in the half to make it 16-6. That drive stayed alive despite a John Aung interception which was called back due to a penalty. LHS marched to the North two and had first and goal with 1.3 second left but North made a goal line stand and it was 16-6 at the half.
Liberal’s Jesse Alvarado recovered a fumble on the North 39 leading to an 11 yard Dunlap scamper for a score and the two made it 24-6 with 9:31 to play in the third. Alvarado recovered another fumble on Liberal’s 24. Dunlap’s 50 yard TD run made it 32-6 with 20.5 second to go in the third. Freshman Jaylin Staten added a 22 yard touchdown run with 8:15 to play.
Dunlap rushed for 178 yards and Alan Marquez ran for 103 yards. Dunlap was also 8-14 passing for 79 yards.
