SCCC Tennis Begins Fall Play in Tyler

TYLER, Texas – The Seward County Saints started their fall season this past weekend, playing in the Tyler Invite in Tyler, Texas. The Saints finished the weekend going a combine 32-11 as a team, while five different singles players captured the title in their bracket.

In singles play, reigning Region VI No. 2 singles champion Duro Opacic moved up to the No.1 Singles spot going 2-1 on the weekend. He won his first two matches 2-1 and 3-2 before falling in the championship 4-3.

Nicolas Rousset fought his way to the No. 2 singles championship, winning his first match 5-2 and his second match 2-1. Rousset won the No. 2 title, 3-2, defeating Aaron Westerlund of Tyler Junior College.

After losing in his first match 1-2, No. 3 singles Tim Lamare turned around to win the consolation bracket, winning 5-3 in the first round and 2-1 in the consolation championship.

The No. 4 and No. 5 singles both went a perfect 3-0 on the week, winning their brackets. Hugo Lobo defeated Drew Brown of Tyler Junior College for the No. 4 title, while Claudio Quinones defeated Adolfo Arroyo of Tyler Junior College for the No. 5 title.

No. 6 through 8 singles all won their first match, but fell in their second match, coming up one shy of their bracket championship. However, they all rebounded to win their last match to take 3rd place. Franck Soulerot defeated Riley Smith 2-1 to take 3rd place in the No. 6 singles. After losing 2-1 in the second round, Jafer Infante defeated Petar Damjanovic 4-0 to take 3rd place in No. 7 singles. In No. 8 singles, Diego Freire took down Nathan Torres 7-6, 7-6 to win 3rd place.

The Saints took home the bracket championships in No. 9 and No. 10 singles to round out singles play, with Benji Finet winning 3-2 in the No. 9 spot and Carlo Izurieta winning 4-2 in the No. 10 spot.

In doubles play, No. 1 doubles partners Opacic and Lamare, lost their opening match 8-6, but fought back to win the consolation bracket, 9-8.

No. 5 double partners Lobo and Izurieta reached the championship match in their bracket, but fell in the title match 8-6. No. 6 doubles Infante and Monardo, were the only doubles team to win their bracket, going 3-0 and winning the bracket 8-3.

The Saints travel to Oklahoma City on Friday (Sep. 15) to participate in the Trojan Invitational over the weekend.

WOMEN

TYLER, Texas – The Lady Saints tennis team began their fall ITA season in Tyler, Texas as they participated in the Tyler Invitational. They finish with a combined 14-16 record over the two-day tournament.

No. 4 singles Maria Aveiga lost her opening match 7-5, 6-3, but bounced back to win the consolation bracket, taking the first match 6-3, 6-2 before winning the bracket 6-2, 6-3. No. 5 singles Steffany Bermudez was the closest Lady Saint to winning their bracket, falling one match short, losing 10-12, 4-6, to take second place.

Martina Borges ended the weekend, winning the consolation bracket at the No. 6 singles spot. Following a tight match in round one where she lost 6-2, 4-6, 8-10, she turned around to win her following two matches 6-2, 6-0 and 6-3, 6-3.

Yusra Hegy started the No. 7 singles bracket off with a win, but a second-round loss bumped her to the 3rd place game, where she won 12-10, 6-3. Megan Petr was the final Lady Saint in the No. 8 spot. Following a first round loss, she bounced back to reach the consolation championship, only to come up just short 6-8, 2-6.

In doubles play, No. 1 and No. 2 doubles finished the weekend going 1-2. No. 1 doubles partners reached the consolation championship, but lost 8-10, 4-6. No. 2 doubles partners Macharova and Bermudez reached the third-place match, falling 10-8, 2-6.

Borges and Hegy reached the No. 4 doubles championship match, winning the first round 10-8, 10-2 and the second round 10-8, 6-8, 8-6 before falling in the final match.

The Lady Saints travel to Oklahoma City on Friday (Sep. 15) to participate in the Trojan Invitational over the weekend.
