Stephenson Named First Boys Swim Coach at LHS

Current Liberal High School Head Girls Swim Coach Mary Stephenson will add Head Boys
Swim Coach to her coaching duties beginning this 2017-2018 season. This will be the first year
for both Stephenson as their head coach and the boys’ swim program altogether.
“Stephenson was instrumental in initiating the program as an opportunity for more high school
boys to be a part of extracurricular activities. She has done a tremendous job with the girls
swim team, and I have no doubt that she will be just as successful in leading the boys team as
well,” Athletic Director Clairinda Weatherwax said.
Stephenson interviewed with a panel of building and district administrators, parents, fellow
coaches, and students. She was selected for her sincere interest and dedication in getting the
program off the ground.
“Coach Stephenson genuinely cares about the student-athletes and has already been willing to
put a great deal of time and effort into generating support and interest in the program. She is an
outstanding asset to Redskin athletics,” Liberal High School Principal Ashley Kappelmann said.
Stephenson has coached girls swimming at Liberal High School the past two years. She has
experience as a high school swimmer herself, competing for McPherson High School.
