Seward Hosts Hall of Fame Banquet

It was a night to celebrate the seasons.  Seward County Community College hosted their annual Saints Athletics Hall of Fame Banquet.  It was an emotional night for many.  Bill and Virginia Colvin were inducted posthumously into the hall of fame and their son and SCCC Booster Club President Kent Colvin spoke of what they meant to the college.  Courtney Auger became the first softball player to be inducted into the Saints Athletics Hall of Fame.  And Galen McSpadden received two standing ovations in his final banquet as athletic director.  He is in the final months as AD after 33 years in the position.  And Louie the SCCC mascot made his first public appearance.

Lady Saints basketball player from Wellington, Texas Erin Richardson won the Jamie Talbert Award and Brian Tims from Colorado Springs won the Wade Johnstone Award.

The four male candidates for the WA Shuffelberger Award for top GPA for male athletes are Errett Edwards (baseball), Jared Biddy (baseball), Brian Tims (baseball), and Przemyslaw Zielinski (tennis).  The females are Madison Hoelting (tennis), Tadi Mrewa (tennis), Neidy Ocuane (basketball), and Erin Richardson (basketball).  Terry Blair won the maintenance award.

The winners of the SC ESPY’s were women’s basketball for team of the year, tennis player Carlos Anez for male athlete of the year, basketball player Mollie Mounsey for female athlete of the year, tennis coach Greg Owen for coach of the year, softball player Monique Ashley for freshman of the year, and the Region 6 championship win for volleyball over Hutchinson was game of the year.

Lady Saint basketball coach Toby Wynn and volleyball coach Thais Baziquetto-Allen received KJCCC coach of the year honors.  Wynn was recognized for his 300th career win and McSpadden for his 1,200th win.

Here is a description of Seward’s three hall of famers.

Familiar faces to all long time Saints and Lady Saints fans, the Colvin’s played a major role in the development of Seward County Athletics throughout the years.  Providing support in a number of different ways for SCCC, the Colvin’s contributed countless dollars to Saints and Lady Saints athletes from the purchasing of Championship rings to feeding Seward County teams all over the country at their Pizza Hut restaurants.  The Colvin’s helped build the Colvin Adult Learning Center on campus, have contributed to the SCCC music department to provide bands for the games in the Greenhouse, as well as being mainstays in the green seats during Saints basketball games over the years.

Auger finished her Seward County career ranking 1^st or 2^nd in every major category including being the all-time leader in both wins with 46 and strikeouts with 558, which at the conclusion of her career was more than double the next highest total.   Her career line with the Lady Saints was as follows: 46-15, 1.52 ERA, 380 IP, 558 K’s.  She holds the top two single season strikeout marks in school history and two of the top three ERA places.   Auger was named the Jayhawk West Most Valuable Player in both of her seasons with the Lady Saints and was a 3^rd Team NJCAA All-American in 2009 when she led Seward to their first ever trip to the NJCAA National Tournament.

SCCC hosts the Booster Club Golf Tournament at the Liberal Country Club Saturday morning.  The booster club’s fundraising golf ball drop will begin at 3 and the baseball games were moved back to 3:30 due to yesterday’s rain.  The baseball games air on 1270  and kscbnews.net.  At 6:30, when the Royals broadcast begins on 1270, the Saints broadcast continues on kscbnews.net and sewardsaints.com.
