Great Bend Scraps Past Liberal

Great Bend won a defensive struggle 40-38 over visiting Liberal Friday.  The Lady Redskins turned the ball over far too often and missed too many lay-ups in loss in front of a big crowd at Great Bend Fieldhouse.

The Lady Panthers, who were looking to snap a three game losing skid, led 8-4 early before leading 8-6 after one quarter.  The Lady Redskins jumped ahead 13-8 but led only 17-16 at the half.  It was a 26-26 tie after three.  Reyna Gonzalez gave Liberal a 34-32 lead with 3:51 to play after a three point play.  Liberal led 36-34 with 50 seconds left and the ball when LHS coach Carter Kruger was whistled for a technical.  Great Bend missed both free throws and did not score on their possession but Liberal missed a front end of a 1 and 1 giving Great Bend the ball back.  The Lady Panthers took a 38-36 lead before Ali Lucero nailed two free throws to tie the game at 38-38 with 10 seconds left.  Great Bend’s Carly Dreiling made two free throws with 1.5 seconds left to win it.

Great Bend won despite shooting 3-19 from three point range.  Jade Mickens fought off foul trouble for 11 points.  Great Bend defeats Liberal in Great Bend for an eighth consecutive time.

The Lady Redskins are 10-4 and 3-1 in the WAC after a third consecutive loss.  Great Bend is 9-5 and 4-0.  Liberal hosts Guymon Tuesday night at 6 in the Big House with Redskin Pre-game at 5:45 on 1270 and kscbnews.net.
