Mildred Alice Geist

Mildred Alice Geist, 97, of Baker, Oklahoma passed away November 10, 2015 at Liberal Springs in Liberal, Kansas.

Mildred was born June 16, 1918, the daughter of James and May Wilburn Howell, in the granary at the family homestead near Tyrone, Oklahoma. She attended school in Tyrone Public School and graduated as the valedictorian for the Class of 1936.

On August 22, 1937 at the home place, Mildred was united in marriage to Henry Franklin “H.F.” Geist. They made their first home south of Baker and later moved to their farm north of Baker. She helped with all phases of farming, drove the tractor, the harvest grain cart and feed the crews. Making bread, gardening and taking care of her family were her everyday joys.

She was a member of the Tyrone Baptist Church where she played the piano, taught Sunday School, was the VBS director and sang in the quartet. Mildred also served for 50 years on the Texas County Election Board, was a member of the Eureka Extension, Denim and Lace, Needle and Friends Quilt Guild and sang in Sweet Adeline.

She was preceded in death by her husband, H.F. in August 31, 1986; two sons, Darrel and Garyl; great grandson, Dalton Geist, three brothers, James, Charles and Bob, one sister, Thelma Murphy.

Members of the family include her daughter, Carol & Jack Mendenhall of Baker, Oklahoma, two daughters in law, Vedonna & Ed Poley of Liberal, Kansas and Jane & Clovis Swanner of Ardmore, Oklahoma; sister in law, Julia Howell of Liberal, Kansas; seven grandchildren, Garyl Gene & Lynn Geist, Elizabeth & Eric Klinger, Toby & Karen Mendenhall, Timmy & Amy Mendenhall, Terri & Wendell Goertzen, Holly Rae & Larry Harp, Gary & Amanda Geist; eighteen great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, November 14, 2015 at the Tyrone Baptist Church in Tyrone, Oklahoma with Rev. Gary Stone officiating. Interment will be in the Tyrone Cemetery directed by Roberts Brothers Funeral Home in Hooker, Oklahoma.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 13 at the Roberts Brothers Funeral Home in Hooker, Oklahoma.
