Kenneth D. Unruh

Kenneth D. Unruh, 82, died January 27, 2014 at Kindred Hospital Northwest in Houston, Texas. Born January 17, 1932, in Larned, he was the son of Ernest W. “Pete” and Gladys (White) Unruh. On November 24, 1957 he married Darlene M. Lofland in Great Bend. He graduated from Radium High School, attended Kansas State University, and completed his Bachelor of Science degree at Fort Hays State University. Working with the General Adjustment Bureau, Mr. Unruh was an insurance adjuster and manager for twenty-one years. He then started his own State Farm Agency, which he operated for twenty-two years in Liberal. He retired in 1997 to travel with his wife, visit grandchildren, and help manage the family farm. He was an avid pilot. His joy was flying his “Mooney” airplane, and enjoyed hunting, trapshooting, and was a great marksman. He helped build a new gun range for the Liberal Gun Club. He taught trap shooting at the Seward County Community College.

He was a member of the First Christian Church, Liberal, and served as deacon and trustee. He loved serving at the Liberal Air Museum.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene M. Unruh, of the home;two daughters, Rachelle Webster and her husband Terry of Houston, Texas, and Andrea Wiley and her husband Scott of Houston, Texas; one brother, Rodney Kline Unruh and his wife Jane of Elk City, Oklahoma; six grandchildren, Lauren Jones of Austin, Texas, Paige Brown and her husband Cory of Austin, Texas, Kelsie Morrison and her husband Marty of Houston, Texas, Tawni Webster of Houston, Texas, Tanner Webster of Margate, Florida, and Terry Don Webster and his wife Tiffany of Borger, Texas; and one great-grandchild, Carter Brown of Austin, Texas. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Janet Lea Unruh.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 1, 2014 at Bryant Funeral Home with the Reverend Dr. Scott V. Solether officiating. Burial will be at the Great Bend Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m., Friday, January 31, 2014 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the Liberal Gun Club, in care of the funeral home.
