Redskin Runners Qualify for State
The Liberal Redskin cross country teams traveled to Lake Afton to compete in their Regional
Championships Saturday hosted by Bishop Carroll High School. Others teams in attendance
looking for a trip to the State Championships were Bishop Carroll, Kapaun Mt. Carmel, Maize,
Maize South, Goddard, Goddard Eisenhower, and Arkansas City. The top three teams and top
ten individuals qualify for the State Championships.
The boys teams were the first to compete on the day. The Redskins got off to a slow start
with no runners in the top twenty at the mile marker. Edgar Moreno started to move through the
field to crack the top ten and earn All-Regional honors with a 9
th
place finish and a time of 17:10.
Emilio Tovilla was the next runner for the Redskins finishing the 5K course in a time of 17:29
good enough for 16
th
place. Right on Tovilla
’
s heels was teammate Greg McClurg. McClurg
’
s
time of 17:33 put him as the 19
th
runner to cross the line. The fourth runner for the Redskins was
Alex Chance. Chance ran 17:57 and was 26
th
. Freshman Antonio Borunda rounded out the 5
th
scoring position for the Redskins with a time of 18:10 in 31
st
place. Ryan Doll and Juan Beltran
were the 6
th
and 7
th
runners for Liberal with times of 18:18 and 18:21 crossing the line in 34
th
and
37
th
place. When the scores were tallied the teams earning a spot to state were Maize with 40
points and Bishop Carroll continued their streak of qualifying for state every year since 1984
coming in 2
nd
place with 44 points. The new member of 5A, Maize, took the final spot with 85
points. The Redskins finished in 4
th
place with 101 points. After all the qualifying teams runners
were taken out of the equation they take at least 5 individuals from non qualifying teams. The
Redskins had three such runners: junior Edgar Moreno with his second trip to state, senior
Emilio Tovilla in his third trip to state, and senior Greg McClurg with his fourth consecutive trip
to the State Championships.
The girls were the last race of the day and they knew they were going to have to leave it
all on the course to qualify the team for state. Camryn Slatten used her momentum from last
week to have another great race. Slatten ran a smart race in only her fourth 5K of the year to
finish in third place behind two of the top runners in the state. Slatten completed the course in
19:44. Junior teammate Saw Ahmara joined Slatten in the All-Regional honors list with a
seventh place finish running 20:35. Junior Yanelly Jurado ‘s time of 20:58 helped her cross the
line in 17
th
place. The fourth runner for the Redskins was Sophomore Kelsey Ramsey. Ramsey
placed 21
st
with a time of 21:30. The last scoring position on the team was taken by junior Chloe
Alling. Alling covered the 5K distance in a time of 21:53 as the 29
th
runner to cross the line.
Junior Karen Hernandez
’
s time of 22:41 was the 40
th
fastest in the race, while sophomore Reyn
Slatten placed 42
nd
with her time of 23:00. The Redskins had to wait patiently to hear the results
to find out their fate for next week with six teams who have all been ranked in the state
competing for three spots. The final team scores were Maize South 40, Liberal 77, Maize 83,
Bishop Carroll 92, Kapaun Mt. Carmel 100, Goddard Eisenhower 105, Ark City 208, and
Goddard 231. The Redskins qualified for state for the third straight time. The Redskin Roster
for the State meet will be Camryn Slatten, Saw Ahmara, Yanelly Jurado, Kelsey Ramsey, Chloe
Alling, Karen Hernandez, Reyn Slatten, Kayla Gokey, and Sarah Arriaga.
The state championships will be Halloween morning at Rim Rock Farms in Lawrence
Kansas with the 5A girls running at 10:00AM and the 5A boys competing at 12:15PM.
