Redskin Boys and Girls Win Hugoton Meet

The Redskin Cross Country teams competed in the Hugoton Invitational Saturday morning.

Liberal was one of 28 high school teams to compete in the meet. Both boys and girls got to see some

state ranked teams as Johnson County is ranked fifth and Scott City fourth in their perspective classes for

the girls, and on the boys side Johnson County is ranked fifth, Scott City third, and Hugoton third in their

classes. All runners ran a 5,000 kilometer race on the Hugoton golf course.

The girls were back to full strength with the addition of junior Camryn Slatten who had been

recovering from an injury. Slatten led the Redskins with a second place finish, completing the course in

20:08. Junior Yanelly Jurado ran to a top ten finish as well with a time of 21:35 in ninth place. Junior

Saw Ahmara and sophomore Kelsey Ramsey placed 14

and 15

place with times of 21:54 and 21:55,

respectively. Junior Chloe Alling was another medalist for the Redskins with a 20

place finish in 22:27.

Junior Karen Hernandez and sophomore Tania Minjarez crossed the line in 23

and 24

in 22:57 and

23:10, respectively. The Redskins ended the race with 52 points in first place. Following them were the

ranked Scott City with 61 points and Hugoton finished third with 69 points.

The boys team had their top five runners medal in the top 20 as well, with junior Edgar Moreno

finishing 3

with a time of 16:52. This marked the first time Moreno has broke the 17 minute barrier.

The senior quad of Emilio Tovilla, Greg McClurg, Alex Chance, and Ryan Doll rounded out the top five

scoring positions in 10

, 11

, 13

, and 19

place. All four seniors ran their fastest times of the season

with a 17:38, 17:42, 17:48, and an 18:04, respectively. Freshman Antonio Borunda ran in his first varsity

race and didn’t disappoint as he ran a personal record time of 18:27 and was the 28

runner to cross the

line. Junior Juan Beltran’s time of 18:38 was good enough for 31

place. When all the runners were

tallied for a score every second counted for the Redskins as they were able to get their first win of the

season narrowly edging out the state ranked home team Hugoton by 1 point and state ranked Scott City.

The top three teams were Liberal 55 points, Hugoton 56 points, and Scott City 89 points.

Both JV teams saw success as they both had six runners in the top 20 and got team wins. On the

boys side freshman Keylan Cruz, freshman Joel Obando, sophomore Tristen Bigham, and freshman Javier

The boys JV team dominated the points scoring a near perfect score of 17 points. On the girls side

Sophomore Reyn Slatten got faster every mile to win the race. Freshman Joanna Suarez finished in 5

Seniors Gaby Amparan and Sarah Arriaga were the 9

runners to complete the course. Junior

and sophomore Ali Lucero finished in 18

. The girls finished the JV race with 29

points.

The Redskins will take their top varsity runners to the Rim Rock Classic next Saturday morning.

The Rim Rock Classic is run on the famous Rim Rock Farm the home course of the Kansas Jayhawks. The

Redskins will get a chance to preview the course of the Kansas State Championships hosted on October

. The Rim Rock Classic is one of the largest meets in the Central United States. Currently there are

155 schools and over 3,400 runners from nine different states stated to compete at the meet.
