It felt like the start of a long road to healing. On an emotional night in front of a big crowd, the Seattle Studs defeated the Liberal Bee Jays 4-2 at Lawrence Dumont Stadium. The Bee Jays incur their first loss in Championship Week and play at the NBC’s Super Six Thursday night.
The game was delayed 25 minutes as the crowd poured in for the game. Kaiser Carlile’s family was on the field for a ceremony before the game. The family went through a line in front of the BJ dugout giving the players and coaches hugs before the game. Members of the Studs stood with BJ players during the national anthem. A "KC" banner in right center was unfurled and will remain at the ballpark.
The Pacific International League’s Studs have been to three straight NBC championship games. Seattle didn’t waste any time scoring two in the first against starter Tyler Wiedenfeld. They added an unearned run in the third. Liberal rallied in the fifth as Micah Green led off with a double and scored on a Gavin Wehby single. Brent Williams singled home Luke Sherley but the BJ’s didn’t score again. They had chances when loading the bases in the secon, had their lead off man on in the second but was picked off by the catcher, they had two more men on in their two run fifth, and Williams narrowly missed a home run in the eighth when a ball hit the top of the wall and he had to settle for a double. Tyler Wiedenfeld pitched strongly into the eighth before Jakob Hernandez relieved him. Gavin Wehby was 3-4.
Liberal is 35-18 and plays Thursday in the Super 6 on 1270 and kscbnews.net.
