Drury Hits for Cycle in Win at FPC

Following a pair of walk off wins in their two previous games, the Seward County Saints made sure there would be no such drama on Wednesday as they hit the road to Borger, Texas to take on the Frank Phillips Plainsmen. Seward scored four in the first and exploded for nine runs in the fifth inning to blow out the Plainsmen in run rule fashion 17-5. In the win, Seward sophomore Dillon Drury hit for the cycle, the Saints first player to do so since current San Francisco Giants farmhand Kelby Tomlinson did so in 2010.
Like the last time they played the Plainsmen, it didn’t take Seward long to get going in this one as the Saints scored four times in the 1st inning, getting a two RBI double from All-American Brent Williams and a sacrifice fly from Alec Isaac to go in front 4-0 before Frank even came up to the plate.
Saints pitching gifted Frank two runs back in the bottom of the inning on a pair of bases loaded walks to make it 4-2, but Williams was back at it in the top half of the 2nd, unloading on a two run home run to stretch the Saints lead back to four at 6-2.
Seward used the long ball once again in the top of the 3rd as Dillon Drury lifted off on a solo shot to push the Saints lead to 7-2.
In the 4th Drury drove in another run for Seward, this one on an RBI triple to make it 8-2 Saints. Not only did the triple stretch the Seward lead to six, but it also put Drury just a single away from hitting for the cycle and the game was still just in the 4th inning.
After the rocky start, Saints pitching controlled the Plainsmen bats and it remained an 8-2 game into the 5th.
Seward exploded in the 5th, getting back to back RBI doubles from Josh Nicol and Alex White to score three runs and make it an 11-2 game. They didn’t stop there as Williams remained red hot with another RBI double to push the lead to 12-2. Needing just a single for his cycle, Drury didn’t wait long to execute it as he was up next, lacing a single through the hole to complete the historic task and kept the Saints rolling. Seward ended up scoring nine runs in the inning as Logan Nethercot got into the act with an RBI double, Nicol had another RBI knock, and Isaac hit his second sac fly to blow the game open to 17-2.
Frank Phillips scored three times in the 6th, but it wasn’t nearly enough to keep the game going as Nate Sylvester struck out the side in the 7th to wrap up the 17-5 run rule win for the Saints.
Drury’s cycle led the Saints 17 hit attack as the sophomore utility man finished a perfect 4 for 4 with 3 runs scored and a 2 RBI’s. Williams also had a huge game but was overshadowed by Drury’s historic feat. He finished 4 for 5 and was just a triple away from a cycle of his own, while driving in 5 runs. Nicol also had a big day, going 3 for 4 with 2 RBI’s and 2 runs scored for the Saints. Nathan Dockery pitched well out of the Saints bullpen in the victory, he earned the win to improve to 2-1 on the season by going 3 shutout innings and striking out 3.
Seward improves to 21-18 on the season while Frank Phillips falls to 13-22.
Next up for the Saints is the long trip to Concordia to take on Cloud County over the weekend. The Saints and T-Birds will play a 2:00 doubleheader on Saturday followed by a 1:00 twinbill Sunday.
