Seven Seward Athletes and Six Teams Earn NJCAA Awards

Seven Seward County student-athletes and six of the seven teams on campus were honored on Tuesday with the NJCAA’s annual academic awards release.

Individually Women’s Basketball players Shanise Brooks and Janel Tammen were joined by Baseball player Brandon Rix led the group as recipients of the Superior Academic Award. Two more Saints Baseball players, Austin King and Reed Thompson were alongside Softball players Andrea Sitter and Carmen Hughes in receiving Exemplary Academic Awards.

Six of the seven Seward County teams also received a pat on the back by the NJCAA as Volleyball, Women’s Basketball, Baseball, Softball, and Men’s & Women’s Tennis were all honored as NJCAA All-Academic teams. Jerry Thor’s Men’s Tennis team finished 3rd in the race for the National Academic Championship while Toby Wynn’s Lady Saints Basketball team finished 6th.

To qualify for the Superior Academic Award, second year student-athletes must achieve between a 3.80 and 3.99 cumulative GPA. For the Exemplary Academic Award student-athletes must achieve between a 3.60 and 3.79 GPA. To be named an NJCAA All-Academic Team, teams must register higher than a 3.00 cumulative GPA.
